You can find breeding Barn Swallows all over the Northern hemisphere on the world. Especially in Europe the populations face strong declines, due to closed barns and tarmac instead of muddy streets through the landscape. They need mud for building their nest mostly inside houses and cattle sheds and even small wet spot with clay helps them a lot. Also a strong decline in insect abundance is a critical point for them.

Rauchschwalben brüten über die gesamte Nordhemisphere der Welt. Besonders in Europa nimmt der Bestand ab. Gründe dafür sind zunehmend geschlossene Viehhaltung und die Asphaltierung von ursprünglich matschigen Feldwegen. Sie brauchen aber matschiges Material, um ihre Nester zu bauen und schon eine kleine feuchte Stelle mit etwas Lehm darin hillft ihnen enorm für die Brut. Auch der dramatische Rückgang der Insekten, ihrer Nahrung, trägt zum Bestandsverlust bei.
