ABOARD
Songbirds, despite the fact that they cannot land on water, significantly migrate over open waterbodies, like the North Sea. Especially when the weather conditions, initially suited to migrate, suddenly deteriorate at sea, they seek landing opportunities, like ships or platforms. They get additionally attracted by artificial light at night, which is very prominent on vessels, platforms and offshore windfarms mainly due to human safety regulations. However, the birds photographed here, although being night-time migrants landed on the survey vessel during the day, but most of them departed soon after arrival and continued migration.
Obwohl Singvögel nicht auf dem Wasser landen können, ziehen sie häufig über offenenes Wasser wie über die Nordsee. Vor allem wenn sich die Wetterbedingungen, die ursprünglich für den Zug geeignet
waren, auf See plötzlich verschlechtern, suchen sie nach Landemöglichkeiten wie Schiffen oder Plattformen. Zusätzlich werden sie nachts durch künstliches Licht angelockt, das auf Schiffen,
Plattformen und Offshore-Windparks vor allem aufgrund von Sicherheitsvorschriften für Menschen sehr präsent ist. Die hier fotografierten Vögel sind zwar Nachtziher, landeten aber tagsüber auf dem
Forschungsschiff. Die meisten von ihnen flogen bald nach ihrer Ankunft wieder ab und setzten ihre Wanderung fort.
