Neben vielen anderen auffälligen Merkmalen, ist die Form des Nasenlochs ein wohl eher ungewöhnliches Merkmal zur Unterscheidung zum Mäusebussard. Durch seine Ernährungsweise, bei der der Wespenbussard oft von Hautflüglern angegriffen wird, braucht er ein Nasenloch in welches keines dieser Insekten hereinkrabbeln kann. Deshalb ist sein Nasenloch schlitzförmig, während der Mäusebussard als vorwiegend Mäuse- und Aasfresser diese Anpassung nicht nötig hat und deshalb ein eher rundes Nasenloch vorweist.

Among many other striking features, the shape of the nostril is probably a rather unusual feature to distinguish Honey buzzards from common buzzards. Due to its way of feeding, where the honey buzzard is often attacked by Hymenoptera, it needs a nostril into which none of these insects can crawl. Therefore its nostril is slit-shaped, while the common buzzard, as a predominantly mouse and carrion eater, does not need this adaptation and therefore has a rather round nostril.
