Different, than in most other waterbirds, the feathers of this species are not coated with oil from the uropygial gland and as a result not waterproof. This has the advantage, that he is better in diving, has less buoyancy and can hunt fish more easy. The disadvantage is, that he has to dry his feathers in the sun before flight, like the bird on the photo.

 

Anders als bei den meisten anderen Wasservögeln fettet diese Art ihre Federn nicht mit der öligen Substanz aus der Bürzeldrüse ein und diese sind somit nicht wasserabweisend. Das hat den Vorteil, dass er durch weniger Auftrieb besser tauchen und somit auch besser Fisch jagen kann. Nachteil ist aber, dass er, wie der Vogel auf dem Bild, seine Federn in der Sonne trocken muss, bevor er fliegen kann.
